Caramelized onions add the finishing touch for all foods whether it’s burgers, pasta alla carbonara, roasted chicken, etc. There are many ways to make caramelized onions. Some prefer olive oil, others prefer a little butter. The extremely radical ones go for both. My favorite way is to sweat the onions out with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and add a pinch of sugar to bring out the natural sweetness of the onion. Whatever onion you prefer works here.
- 1 large onion
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- kosher salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Cut onion in half and slice thinly.
- In a nonstick pan, heat olive oil on medium high. Once oil is hot (you can tell if there are ripples in the pan) addonions, salt and pepper and stir occasionally for 5-7 minutes.
- Once onions have started to brown, reduce the heat to low and add sugar. Cook for another 10 minutes. Onions are ready when the edges are brown and the onions have reduced.
